Your opportunity


We are currently searching for a senor legal expert and leader to join our Wealth & Capital Markets (W&CM) platform.


The platform comprises the Advice, Investments, Life & Super, Property, and Trustees business units. The strategic purpose is to link the organisation’s valuable efforts in helping Australians secure their financial wellbeing with capital and social infrastructure needs of the communities.


The incoming General Manager will lead the provision of independent, proactive, strategic, and commercial legal and governance services within the Wealth & Capital Markets business, and proactively support broader risk and compliance services across Australian Unity.


Leading a highly experienced team of 12, responsibilities will include (but not limited to):


  • Manage the Wealth & Capital Markets legal team (excluding Trustee Services) and external legal resources as required to review, negotiate, and advise on various commercial arrangements, including M&A activity.
  • Provide expert advice to and present to board and committees as required.
  • Lead dispute resolution processes and manage regulatory inquiries including external dispute resolution processes.
  • Ensure proactive and effective management of licensing for W&CM such as structure and number of Australian Financial Services Licenses, application processes, nominations, and updates and training of Responsible Managers.
  • Oversight on all regular and ad hoc corporate notification and reporting requirements for W&CM entities such as ASIC and ASX lodgements.
  • Oversight on due diligence processes and provide advice and support in conjunction with the Risk & Compliance team where appropriate
  • Provide leadership to promote a strong culture of compliance and early identification and management of risk.


About you


We are searching for a professional who will join us in striving to live our values of bold, warm, and honest, in everything we do.


Expertise and qualifications will include:


  • Tertiary qualification in Law of 10+ years PQE, ideally with banking and finance, funds management, property exposure and litigation and dispute resolution experience.
  • A sound understanding of Risk Management and Risk Culture, including the three lines of defense model, coupled with detailed understanding of good governance principles.
  • A high level of business acumen with a deep appreciation of legislative and compliance requirements and their application and effect upon business operations.
  • Highly developed people management and leadership, influencing, and stakeholder skills with the ability to establish partnerships across the Group and external partners.
  • Passionate about the law and providing expert advice to solve complex matters.
  • Demonstrated ability to inspire and drive innovation and effective change initiatives.
