Your New Role Looks Like This:

The Legal Counsel will deliver high quality, independently-minded and commercially-focused legal services, aligned to the strategic and commercial drivers of businesses within the Retail platform, part of the Australian Unity Group. This will include the following key activities:

  • Provision of high quality independently minded and commercially focused legal advice on a wide range of matters affecting the Retail platform in a timely and effective manner.
  • Facilitate and promote the role of the Retail Legal and broader Governance (Risk & Compliance) team to operational staff.
  • Act in a manner that is consistent with attracting and maintaining legal professional privilege in relation to sensitive or high-risk matters.
  • Support the Retail Platform to develop a mature understanding on the implementation of specific compliance and legislative requirements.
  • Implement and maintain appropriate legal practice management techniques to manage workload, provide focus and ensure regular updates can be provided to instructors.
  • Support the GM Legal, Risk & Compliance in driving legal and governance-related projects, as required.
  • Drive the adoption of streamlined and compliant contractual processes and documentation that satisfy business needs, whilst appropriately managing legal risk.
  • Manage and resolve claims, disputes and litigation in a manner that produces efficient and effective outcomes that are in Australian Unity's best interests.
  • Demonstrate a deep understanding of applicable regulations and their impact, or potential impact, on Retail’s businesses, in particular its private health insurance and general insurance distribution businesses.

 

About You:

  • Undertaken relevant education. Tertiary qualifications in law
  • Admission as a legal practitioner to the Supreme Court of an Australian State or Territory
  • Current practicing certificate
  • 7 or more years of relevant experience in private practice or an in-house legal function
  • Experience in managing legal support staff or junior
  • Experience dealing with senior management and regulators
